Thanks to the incorporation of more than 100 specialists in Data Engineering, Data Architecture, Data Science and Data Visualization, following the acquisition in 2015 of market leaders Synergic Partners.

LUCA also comprises the data-based advertising business of Telefónica, which operates under Movistar Ads, VIVO Ads and Smart Media brands.

Our history

We took our first steps in October 2016 and since then we have continued to learn, develop and grow. Our name, LUCA, refers to the “Last Universal Common Ancestor”, the most recent common universal ancestor of all living beings today. In the business world we also have something in common: data. And data is our passion.

JANUARY 2011

  • First R & D projects of Telefónica in Big Data for companies and public administrations.
2013

APRIL 2013

  • Launch of the Smart Steps platform in the United Kingdom.
2014

MARCH 2014

  • Launch of Smart Steps in Spain and Brazil.
  • Launch of LUCA ATP in the United Kingdom, a service based on the Smart Digits platform.

JANUARY 2015

  • Launch of Smart Steps in Hispam and Germany.

NOVEMBER 2015

  • Acquisition of Synergic Partners - We allied with one of the best consulting and analytical partners to enrich the Big Data portfolio at Telefónica.

MAY 2016

  • Joint Venture is created in Big Data with China Unicom.
  • Launch of Data Rewards in Brazil of the VivoAds brand.

OCTOBER 2016

  • Launch of LUCA: Data-Driven Decisions, the data unit of Telefónica.

NOVEMBER 2016

  • Launch of Telefónica Next - the Big Data and IoT subsidiary in Germany.
  • Big Data for Social Good - Passionate about data, and committed to optimizing its' value in society, we create ad hoc projects in line with Sustainable Development Goals

DECEMBER 2016

  • Smart Steps licensing agreement with Israeli telco operator Pelephone.
2017

JANUARY 2017

  • Pilot phase of LUCA Comms with the first customers.
  • Sports Analytics. Knowing that data can help improve the performance of professional athletes, we launched the Sports Analytics area starting with the collaboration with the Movistar Team and Movistar Riders.
  • Launch of Brand Sponsored Data in Hispam.

FEBRUARY 2017

  • Acquisition of Statiq, increasing our data analytics portfolio in the world of advertising.

OCTOBER 2017

  • Big Data Innovation Day: we celebrated our first anniversary with our Big Data Innovation Day event, presenting our sector proposal.

  • Partnership with Huawei.
